Description

The Complex System group at the CRM is looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join the project Probabilistic and Statistical Tools for Complex Systems. This contract is envisaged to start on June 1st, 2022 and will last until September, 31st, 2022.

TASKS

  • Statistical analysis of fat-tailed distributions, including parameter estimation, characteristic scales and finite size scaling.
  • Special emphasis in bivariate and multivariate distributions and correlations.
  • Statistical analysis of point process, waiting times and spatial-temporal clustering.
  • Mathematical modelling of extreme event generating mechanisms. Application of methods to synthetic, laboratory, and open data catalogs.

REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD in Mathematics, Physics, or related disciplines.
  • Proficiency in statistics and applied mathematics.
  • Strong programming skills, preferably in C, Fortran, Python or similar (structured programming), R (statistical analysis)
  • Data visualization (GNUplot, Origin or similar)
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Proven scientific record on applied mathematics, statistical physics
  • Capacity of performing independent research.
  • Clarity of exposition of scientific results.
  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and the study of complex systems

ASSESSABLE CONDITIONS

  • Experience in the modelling of extreme-event generation mechanisms.
  • Experience in non-parametric statistics, multivariate and fat-tailed distributions.
  • Scientific record of applications of mathematics and statistics to geosciences.

  
CONTRACT DETAILS

  • Expected starting date: June 1, 2022
  • Duration of the contract until September 31, 2022
  • Full-time contract (37.5 h/week)
  • Salary as established by collective agreement


EVALUATION PROCESS AND CRITERIA

The selection process will be evaluated by the CRM Director or the CRM deputy director, Dr. Álvaro Corral, as principal investigator of the CRM Complex Systems Group, and another member from the research group. This process consists in:

  1. Admission of candidates: applicants must submit a curriculum vitae and a cover letter​ by email at crm@crm.cat​, as well as address scientific enquiries to acorral@crm.cat, until April 17, 2022, indicating the reference code of the offer. The requests referred from another portal, other than the CRM job offers section and the instructions contained therein, will not be accepted.
  2. Shortlist: assessment of the fulfilment of the minimum requirements of the offer.
  3. Selection: evaluation of the shortlisted candidates by a total score according to objective criteria.
  4. Final decision: If we find the right person, the resolution will be formally communicated and will be published in the CRM careers section.
